PSO & You: Forward, Focused, and Ready

Creating Your First Power BI Dashboard

Professional Development Session 1

Power BI is a tool many people hear about every day but may not fully understand how it works or when to use it. In this session, participants will learn what Power BI does, when it is more useful than tools like Excel, and when another option might be a better fit. We will also talk about data refresh issues and how access and sharing work at UGA. During the session, participants will build a simple dashboard by connecting to an Excel data source, creating a basic measure, and adding a table, bar chart, card, and data slicers. Participants will also learn how to publish and share a report. A sample data file will be provided if needed.

Learning outcomes:

  1. Understand which tool is best for basic reporting needs – Power BI vs. Excel
  2. How to create a basic report in Power BI
  3. How to share and update Power BI reports in the UGA environment
