How to Tell the Story

Professional Development Session 2

Effective communication is about more than words. It is about helping people understand ideas, solve problems, and see possibilities. This session explores how visual communication can transform complex information into clear, compelling messages that engage stakeholders and inspire action. Through examples from community planning, branding, and design, participants will see how renderings, graphics, and other visual tools help communities understand proposed projects and build support for implementation. The session will also highlight what Public Service and Outreach communications teams look for when developing stories about project impact and provide practical guidance on using Canva to create professional materials and collaborate effectively with external clients and partners.

Learning outcomes:

  1. Recognize how visual communication and design can simplify complex information, build understanding, and support better decision-making
  2. Identify the key elements of an effective story and understand what Public Service and Outreach communications teams look for when developing project stories and impact narratives
  3. Apply Canva to create professional-quality graphics, presentations, and outreach materials while collaborating effectively with external clients and partners
  4. Evaluate which communication tools, visuals, and messaging approaches are most appropriate for different audiences, projects, and communication goals
